Make It Wednesday

Northern Regards Artisan Market is excited to welcome back…

Make It Wednesday

Make It Wednesday

We love the quirky and unique and this market wanted to get to know a little more  about our returning stallholders, so we asked them some questions…

Why do you choose to use recycled/upcycled or sustainable pieces in your handmade craft ?

Aside from eco-friendly reasons, I enjoy the challenge of turning what might be considered rubbish into something new. For example, an old pair of socks can be turned into a quirky sock monster with a bit of imagination and a few stitches here and there. An inspirational cocktail helps, too…

Why is handmade important to you ?

Handmade products keep traditional craft practices alive, and they have more character than mass-made goods. The stories behind handmade items are often as unique as the items themselves, so if something grabs your eye at Northern Regards, ask the maker about it!

Make It Wednesday2 June 22

Which is your favorite Melbourne suburb and why ?

I’m too fickle to have a favourite! Collingwood and Fitzroy for the bars and shops, Footscray for food, Richmond for the Corner Hotel, Windsor for op shops and bars, Northcote for Northern Regards!

** Editors note – Great answer ! Especially the Northcote answer !! **

When you are not making or selling at markets, what would we find you doing ?

Trying to avoid being killed by my ever-growing army of zombie hamsters. You can see them at my market stall. They won’t bite….much.

Coffee or tea ? Wine or beer ?

Tea…as long as it’s a Long Island iced tea.

So come on down to Northern Regards Artisan Market on Saturday 2nd November 11am til 4 at Northcote Social Club and enjoy a vino and the unique Make It Wednesday……and if you’re brave……the Zombie Hamsters !

Made by a Mzungu

Another stallholder that we, Northern Regards Artisan Market is excited to welcome back…

Made by a Mzungu

made by a mzungu

We thought we would try to get to know our wonderful returning stall holders Made by a Mzungu  a little more intimately this month – so we asked them some questions…

Why do you choose to use recycled/upcycled or sustainable pieces in your handmade craft ?

I love using postage stamps in my resin pieces as they become wearable art – why leave them in stamp albums unseen for ages when you can wear them.  Most people identify with stamps as also being a part of their travel experiences.  The graphics and designs available are fantastic and original and I can create unique one-off pieces.  The designs in my pieces using vintage wallpaper also have great colours and patterns.  Everything old is new again.

Why is handmade important to you ?

What can be better than buying something that is unique, individual and has thought, time, effort (and love) put into making the item.  Meeting the maker also gives a great connection to the piece.  It’s also a great way to support small businesses and makers that are passionate about what they do.

Made by a Mzungu

Which is your favorite Melbourne suburb and why ?

I live in Preston South so of course it’s my favourite suburb.  I am fortunate to have some fantastic neighbours not to mention a great and unique selection of food, cafes and individual shops – the diversity and individuality is wonderful.  It’s location is fantastic and I love that Preston South is linked with the other great inner northern suburbs of Thornbury, Northcote and Fairfield.  I also love the way the residents support their local shops and markets.

When you are not making or selling at markets, what would we find you doing ?

On Thursdays you will find me doing volunteer work at FareShare (rescuing food, fighting hunger) , a food rescue organisation where I do a food preparation shift making quiches, sausage rolls, slicing, dicing, mixing vegetable etc.  I work with a great bunch of volunteers at a great place contributing to the well-being of Victoria’s hungry.  Every second Friday you’ll find me back at FareShare doing a cleaning shift in their commercial kitchens.

When I’m not doing my volunteer work I’m either crocheting which I’ve just rediscovered and love (currently crocheting a blanket for charity), or doing the general “home stuff” that needs to be done – I think you know what I mean by “home stuff”.  I’m also slightly attached to my laptop staying in contact with friends, looking at patterns, getting new ideas etc.  Reading is also a big part of my life – a good book to read and I am happy.

Coffee or tea ? Wine or beer ?

I love a good pot of chai made with chai leaves and steamed milk – not that mix stuff that passes for a chai latte.   Wine or beer – sorry, neither of them do it for me – but give me a cider (apple or pear) and I’m happy

So come on down to Northern Regards Artisan Market on Saturday 2nd November 11am til 4 at Northcote Social Club and enjoy a vino and the very talented Made by a Mzungu.

We can’t wait to see you there!

Z Twist Art

Northern Regards Artisan Market is excited to welcome back…

Z Twist Art

The next instalment of our ‘getting to know our returning stallholders’ is Z Twist Art

IMG_4198

Why do you choose to use recycled/upcycled or sustainable pieces in your handmade craft ?

I’d like to be able to make a strong intellectual environmental statement, but really I’m just irresistibly drawn to the natural fibres and the soothing rhythms of handmade. It feels as though working close to nature—using local produced wools and fibres—is a natural extension of who I am.

Why is handmade important to you ?

Handmade is real, personal and fun. My own handmade work is an expression of my personality. The handmade work of others gives me something of themselves. And it’s healthy for people and for our environment.

Which is your favorite Melbourne suburb and why ?

I’d have to say, Northcote! Really, there’s so much going on and a great collection of all sorts of people

*Editors note – we have to agree – Northcote is clearly our fave suburb too !

When you are not making or selling at markets, what would we find you doing ?

Caring for young people and a couple of geriatric Jack Russel terriers. I teach textiles and I’ve started working with clay—just for the joy of it.

Coffee or tea ?  Wine or Beer ?

Definitely coffee!

Why do you choose to use recycled/upcycled or sustainable pieces in your handmade craft ?

Items that has been used before have such history attached to them – that’s why I love to recycle vintage books. Anything to reduce the amount of waste we produce and throw away is always a good thing.

Why is handmade important to you ?

It’s important to me because I know I’m getting something special when I purchase handmade and it’s made by someone who loves what they do…and all of that is just good for the soul!

Northern Regards August 10 Found n Bound

Which is your favorite Melbourne suburb and why ?

Windsor – for the great pubs, coffee shops on every corner and the famous Mamara’s Turkish restaurant.

You can find me working 9-5 in an office in Canterbury doing ‘Business Transformation’ (trust me – making journals is much more exciting)

Jackie Made This

Jackie Made This Collage

We thought we would try to get to know our wonderful returning stall holders Jackie Made This a little more intimately this month – so we asked them some questions…

Why do you choose to use recycled/upcycled or sustainable pieces in your handmade craft ?

All my pieces are made using natural fibres, which makes them sustainable and recyclable, but also provides a look and feel that is just not available with synthetic fibres.

Jackie Made This

Why is handmade important to you ?

Handmade allows me to develop every piece I make, which makes it that much more special for the final customer. I know how much I enjoy receiving something that has been made with love by a talented individual, and I hope people feel that way when they receive a piece by Jackie Made This

Which is your favorite Melbourne suburb and why ?

I don’t know, Melbourne is so special as there are so many suburbs with fantastic things happening all the time!

When you are not making or selling at markets, what would we find you doing ?

Hanging out with family and friends, eating good food.

Coffee or tea ? Wine or beer ?

Tea all the way, all day long! And definitely a glass of wine at the end of a long day.

Jean and Ivy

Northern Regards Artisan Market is excited to welcome back…

Jean and Ivy

We thought we would try to get to know our wonderful returning stall holders Jean and Ivy a little more intimately this month – so we asked them some questions…

jean and ivy Collage 2Why do you choose to use recycled/upcycled or sustainable pieces in your handmade craft ?

I love giving this beautiful, discarded china a new lease on life. They certainly don’t make crockery like they used to and it’s a shame to see it go to waste!

Why is handmade important to you ?

Because you’re buying someone’s love, someone’s passion. It’s not mass produced and has its own little quirks and idiosyncrasies

Jean and Ivy Collage 3

Which is your favorite Melbourne suburb and why ?

Williamstown. My husband & I both grew up there so it holds some wonderful memories. Plus the steam packet hotel serve the best parma’s in Melbourne!

When you are not making or selling at markets, what would we find you doing ?

Scouring op shops for those one off fabulous pieces! But we’re getting a puppy on Saturday so I’m tipping I’ll be busy with her from now on!

Jean and Ivy Collage 4

Coffee or tea ? Wine or beer ?

Tea. But I don’t really do hot drinks. You won’t have to ask me twice for a vino though!

So come on down to Northern Regards Artisan Market on Saturday 2nd November 11am til 4 at Northcote Social Club and enjoy a vino and the fantastic Jean and Ivy!
